the Christmas spirit

2019.12.26

Meaning:

Merry Christmas to all you getgo mini-lesson followers! This week’s expression is ‘the Christmas spirit’. One meaning of ‘spirit’ is ‘mood’. Traditionally, this is a Christian expression. It means ‘a mood (and behavior) that tries to be like Christ’. But many of us native speakers who aren’t Christian still use ‘the Christmas spirit’ to mean ‘a giving, loving and forgiving mood’. We also connect it to Christmas traditions like wrapping presents, singing Jingle Bells and decorating Christmas trees.

Example:

A: Why are you watching ‘Love Actually’?
B: I’m just getting in the Christmas spirit! How about you? Why are you wearing black??? Where’s your Christmas spirit?
A: It’s in my heart, not my clothes! Here – I bought you a gift. Hope you enjoy it.

Talking Point(s):

Christmas is a new tradition in Japan. Do you get into the Christmas spirit? Or does Christmas have a different meaning in Japan?
