pile-on

2020.08.05

Meaning:

‘pile’ is another word for ‘heap’ or ‘a lot of things on top of one another’. A ‘pile-on’ means ‘a lot of people attacking one person’. These days, we sometimes use the expressions ‘twitter pile-on’ or ‘social media pile-on’ to describe when many people disagree, criticise and/or shame one person. For example, recently there has been a pile-on on the successful American talk-show host, Ellen DeGeneres. It started with news that Ellen’s company didn’t pay its workers well during Coronavirus lockdowns. Since then the pile-on has developed into thousands of online-comments and several news articles about whether Ellen herself is ‘nice’.

Example:

A: Ooh. This guy says he met Ellen once, and she was really rude.
B: Will you stop reading that gossip?! I hate this kind of twitter pile-on! It’s ugly.
A: Pfft! She’s a billionaire! She should’ve been nicer and it wouldn’t have happened.
B: Agh! Well, I can see you’ve never experienced online bullying!

Talking Point(s):

Can you think of any examples of social media pile-ons in Japan?
