make up

2020.05.13

Meaning:

‘make up’ has lots of meanings. You might know ‘make-up’ as ‘cosmetics’ or as ‘replace’ (eg Can I make up the lesson I missed last week?’). But did you know that ‘make up’ can also mean ‘fix a relationship, after a fight’? Imagine you have a fight with your partner – or a good friend. After the fight, you have a choice – to end the relationship, or to ‘make up’ with the person? If you end a relationship with a good friend because of a fight, we say you ‘fell out’. If you end a relationship with a partner, we say you ‘broke up’. If you fixed a relationship with either a friend or partner, we say you ‘made up’.

Example:

• (Two friends discussing one of the friends’ girlfriend)
A:Did you make up with Tomoko yet?
B: No, she won’t even answer my phone calls… I guess we’ve broken up.
• (A mother talking to her two children)
A: Don’t fall out over a toy, kids. Kiss and make up, and then you can have a snack!

Talking Point(s):

How do you make up with your partner or best friend after a fight?
