go with the flow

2020.09.09

Meaning:

‘go with the flow’ means ‘relax; don’t try to control the situation’. Think of a river. Rivers ‘flow’ (the water moves in one direction). We can fight the flow by swimming or paddling hard in the opposite direction. Or we can ‘go with the flow’ by letting the water carry us where it wants. In real life, we usually say ‘just go with the flow’ to a friend who is stressed and worried about not being in control.

Example:

A: Agh! Rachel and Amy want to go to Perth this holiday. But Perth is so hot in summer. I’ve told them, but they don’t listen. We should go to Melbourne.
B: Well, you’ve told them. And there’re two of them and only one of you. Just go with the flow. Go to Perth. It’s a nice place, even when it’s hot.

A: I want to know how you see our future. Do you think you will ever marry me?
B: I don’t know. Let’s just go with the flow and see what happens.
A: Look, I can’t just go with the flow forever. I need to know!

Talking Point(s):

Do you like to be in control or do you prefer to go with the flow?
