downtime (noun)

2016.04.13

Meaning:

‘downtime’ means ‘time when I am not working’. It’s a positive word; it basically means ‘free time’. However, downtime includes a nuance of recovering from hard work. Originally the meaning of downtime was for businesses. When machines in a factory couldn’t work for any reason (eg because they were broken, or needed maintenance, or staff were unavailable to use them), we called that downtime. These days IT workers talk about systems being in downtime when they aren’t working too. But in modern, everyday conversation we usually use downtime to mean people’s free time.

Example:

A: What are you doing next week?
B: I don’t know. I have 3 days of downtime. I think I’ll go for some long walks, read some books and not think about work at all.

Talking Point(s):

What would you do if you had some downtime?
