Don’t snap at me!

2020.10.07

Meaning:

A ‘snap’ is the sound of a crocodile’s mouth closing (suddenly). We also use ‘snap’ to mean ‘speak suddenly and angrily’. So if someone gets angry at us, we can say, ‘Don’t snap at me!’ to mean ‘Don’t talk to me in that angry voice!’. We sometimes even use the expression, ‘Don’t bite my head off!’ to mean the same thing. It’s also common to use the word ‘snap’ in an apology – ‘I’m sorry I snapped at you.’

Example:

A: Agh! Just *stop* singing that song! You’re driving me crazy!
B: Hey – don’t snap at me! Just ask me nicely.

A: Agh! *Stop* interrupting me! Just stop it!!!
B: Oh, sorry.
A: (sigh) No, I’m sorry. Sorry I snapped at you.

Talking Point(s):

Talking Point(s): Have you ever snapped at someone? Do you think it’s ok to snap at someone if they do something wrong?
