cancel

2020.07.08

Meaning:

Meaning: You may already know the word cancel. It means to stop an event. For example, ‘They cancelled the music festival because of coronavirus’. However, recently people have also started using cancel to mean ‘to block someone from mainstream society’. People are cancelled by: social media (twitter, facebook etc) removing their accounts and/or losing their jobs. For example, some people are asking for JK Rowling to be cancelled because she says that trans-gender women should not be legally called ‘women’. Other people say modern Western culture is now a ‘cancel culture’, and it is not good to cancel people for their opinions.

Example:

A: Ugh. I’m so angry. JK Rowling should be cancelled. I can’t believe she still has a twitter account!
B: No way! I hate cancel culture. Everyone should be free to say what they think.

Talking Point(s):

Is Japan also a ‘cancel culture’? Have any famous Japanese people been cancelled?
