Brace yourself!

2020.05.28

Brace yourself!

Meaning:

In everyday life, ‘brace yourself!’ means ‘get ready for something difficult.’ This comes from the expression ‘Brace Yourself’ on an airplane. On an airplane, ‘brace yourself’ means ‘protect your body’. So, in any situation, ‘brace yourself’ means preparing for a difficult time.

Example:

A: Ok, guys, brace yourselves. It’s going to be a busy day at work today because 3 staff are off sick today. Please do your best.

A: Julie, I have some bad news. Sit down. Brace yourself.
B: What’s wrong?
A: I can’t come to your birthday party. I’m sorry. I have to work.
B: Oh my God! Is that all? I thought you were really sick or something! Don’t worry. I’ll be fine.

Talking Point(s):

Has anyone told you to brace yourself for anything recently?
