A Hot Mess

2021.02.24

Meaning:

‘A hot mess’ = chaos. It means a person or situation that is very disorganised. This expression wasn’t used much in English until about 15 years ago. At that time, people in fashion started using it a lot to describe badly-designed clothes, ugly outfits etc. ‘Hot’ often means ‘sexy’ in English, so some people *sometimes* use ‘hot mess’ to mean a disorganised, but sexy person. But most often, it just means really, really disorganised.

Example:

A: What did you think of the Go to Travel Campaign?
B: Oh, it was a hot mess!

A: How are you after last night?
B: Ugh. Don’t look at me. I’m a hot mess. I need a shower.

Talking Point(s):

Have you ever left the house looking like a hot mess?
